Mahoning County: Child deaths

CHILD DEATHS

Of the 31 children between birth and age 17 who died in 2006, 16 were white and 15 were black; 21 were boys and 10 were girls. Eighteen lived in Youngstown; 4 in Boardman; 3 in Austintown; and 1 each in Beaver, Canfield, Goshen, Milton, Smith and Springfield townships. Causes by age group:

Prematurity: 0-1 month, 8; 1-12 months, 1.

Birth defects: 0-1 month, 2; 1-4 years, 2.

Homicide: 1-4 years, 1; 10-14, 1; 15-17 years, 3.

Motor vehicle accidents: 5-9 years, 1; 15-17 years, 3.

Cancer: 10-14 years, 2; 15-17 years, 1.

Infectious disease: 0-1 month, 1; 1-12 months, 1; 1-4 years, 1.

Seizure disorder: 15-17, 1.

Undetermined/unknown: 1-4 years, 1.

Total deaths: 0-1 month, 11; 1-12 months, 2; 1-4 years, 5; 5-9 years, 1; 10-14 years, 3; 15-17 years, 9.
