Bishop to speak at JCC

YOUNGSTOWN — Bishop George V. Murry of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown will speak at a noon luncheon program Tuesday at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane. Sponsors are the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation and Catholic Charities Services of the diocese.

Presentations by the Jewish community on the 20th anniversary of the international effort to rescue persecuted Jews from the Soviet Union and the diocese on local and national anti-poverty initiatives are planned. There is no charge but reservations are required by calling JCRC at (330) 746-3250, ext. 108.

Station to reopen today

BOARDMAN — The fire station at Lockwood Boulevard and Shields Road was closed Sunday but was to reopen today. Firefighters were working out of the main station on U.S. Route 224.

Arrested after threat

YOUNGSTOWN — Austintown police alerted Youngstown police that a suspect was walking from Austintown to a location in the city with the intent to kill a friend who had beat him up. YPD found the suspect walking east on Decamp Road, approaching Schenley Avenue, about 4:06 a.m. Sunday. Police saw Mitchell L. Halsi, 20, of the 1700 block of Laurie Drive, Austintown, with a brown-handled revolver tucked in his front waistband.

YPD ordered him to put his hands up and get on his knees. After being ordered repeatedly, the suspect finally complied and let go of the gun. YPD reported Halsi, who appeared intoxicated, was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment from an earlier fight. He then was taken to Mahoning County Justice Center. Police recovered a .357-caliber Magnum revolver from Halsi.

Victims’ rights program

WARREN — The Trumbull County Parents of Murdered Children will have a crime victims’ rights awareness program at 5 p.m. April 15, at First United Methodist Church, 309 N. Park Ave.

Taking orders for food

YOUNGSTOWN — Crossroads Church, 554 S. Meridian Road, will be taking orders for Angel Food Blessings in a Box. Crossroads is a host site for this food program, which helps reduce the amount you spend on groceries each month.

The cost is $30 per unit, which includes meats, vegetables, fruit and more, worth $75. There are no income restrictions or guidelines. If you eat, you qualify.

Pre-order, prepay and Ohio Direction Card are accepted. Orders will be taken 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday and April 14 and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday. Distribution of food will be 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. April 26. For additional information, call (330) 544-1064 or (330) 799-9988 or (330) 750-0380.
