TOUGH RESPONSE: Helmeted policemen, left, drove off rioters on Hillman Street in Youngstown who had smashed windows, looted stores and started fires in the aftermath of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. Police made several such sweeps near the Hillman-Warren Avenue intersection. An armored personnel carrier, above, was pressed into service by the National Guard to help keep the peace.
