Conservation agency plans fish, plant sale


YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning Soil and Water Conservation District is selling fingerling-size fish to stock ponds and lakes, along with more than 40 species of trees, shrubs and pond lilies.

The trees, shrubs are 1-4 years old and are up to 36 inches high. Some of the varieties are: black raspberry, white dogwood, blue spruce, pawpaw and pond lilies in a variety of colors. Tree pick-up is April 16, 17 and 18 at Canfield Fairgrounds Coliseum 8. You can browse the selection during these dates or order in advance.

The fingerling fish are: fathead minnows, white amur, redear shellcrackers, crappies, bass, blue gill, channel catfish and yellow perch. Deadline for ordering fingerlings is April 25 with pick-up from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. April 29, also at the coliseum. On the day of pick-up, bring a lined container filled with your own pond water. Five to 10 gallons of water per 100 fish is required. However, the white amur must be placed in a container with a lid or liner large enough to be tied at the top. Only two white amurs to each five gallons of water.
