12 road, bridge projects get funds


The projects have mostly federal and some state funding.

NEW CASTLE — Twelve Lawrence County bridge and road projects will get $38 million in federal and state money this year, said the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

PennDOT spokesman Jim Struzzi said the money for the projects is coming mostly from the federal level. The projects are:

UInterstate 79 improvements at a cost of $10.7 million. The project includes concrete patching, paving, shoulders, drainage, rumble strips, guiderails, signs and pavement markings on 11 miles from the Butler County line to the Mercer County line in Plain Grove Township. The project will begin in May and is set to conclude in February 2009.

URoute 18/109 East Washington: This $2.1 million project to improve 3.67 miles on Route 18 from Route 108 to East Washington Street in New Castle began in 2007. It includes milling and resurfacing, bridge deck repairs, upgrading guiderails and drainage improvements. Lane closures will be necessary. The project is expected to conclude in June.

URoute 422/Ohio State Line to Lapin Lane: The 2.49-mile $1.19 million project includes milling, resurfacing, guide rail improvements and drainage repair on Route 422 from the state line to Lapin Lane in Pulaski Township. It will begin in May and should conclude in late summer.

URoute 351 signal upgrade: The project includes upgrading and coordinating five traffic signals this summer from Fifth Street to Ninth Street in Ellwood City. The estimated cost is $125,000.

UBusiness 422 improvements: This 9.74-mile $3.1 million project includes concrete patching, shoulder and bridge deck repairs, signal upgrades and drainage improvements from Cascade Street in New Castle to the Butler County line. Lane closures will occur. The project is to begin in April and is expected to be finished in April 2009.

URoute 19 (Perry Highway): The $2 million project includes structural overlay, drainage improvements, joint rehabilitation and base repair from Route 108 to the Mercer County line. The project will be finished this year.

URoute 2004 (Butler Avenue): The $427,835 project includes milling and resurfacing, base repair, drainage improvements and joint repairs from East Washington Street to Cascade Street in New Castle. It will occur this summer.

URoute 168 Edwards Run Bridge: The North Beaver Township bridge will be replaced. It will be closed during construction, which will begin in May and is expected to conclude in February. The estimated cost is $1 million.

UVan Gorder Mil Road Bridge: The bridge over the Slippery Rock Creek on Camp Allegheny Road in Wayne Township will be replaced. Construction will begin in June and is expected to end in February. The project will cost $3 million to $3.5 million.

URoute 422 Rosepoint Bridge: The project includes bridge deck and approach repairs on the bridge in Slippery Rock Township. The project is to begin in October and is expected to be finished in November 2009. The estimated cost is $3 million to $4 million.

URoute 422 over Savannah Road: This bridge preservation project in Shenango Township is to begin in late June and should be finished in the fall of 2009. It includes joint, substructure and deck repairs. The estimated cost is $2 million to $3 million.

URoute 422 overheads: The project includes bridge preservation on three bridges over Route 422 on Routes 2012, 4012 and 4016 in Taylor and Neshannock townships. The project includes concrete deck, substructure and joint repairs. It will cost between $1 million and $2 million.
