Penguin baseball falls to Tiffin, 11-7

NILES — Tiffin used eight errors to score six unearned runs as the Dragons defeated the YSU baseball team 11-7 at Eastwood Field.

Erich Diedrich tied the YSU record for career RBIs in the contest by driving in his 138th run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly.

Diedrich, C.J. Morris and David Leon all had two hits while Eric Marzec had three.

Seven of YSU’s errors came in the first four innings as the Dragons scored six unearned runs to take a 6-1 lead.

Tiffin got a run across in each of the first two innings before scoring four times without recording a hit in the fourth. Sean Lucas homered for the Penguins.

In the sixth inning Tiffin scored four runs on three hits and four walks to make the score 10-4.

Softball Penguins sweep pair in Detroit

DETROIT — Senior McKenzie Bedra and freshman Rochelle Vanyi each hit their fifth home run of the season as the YSU softball team swept a doubleheader from Detroit, 3-2, and 2-1.

The Penguins are 5-15, 2-3 in the Horizon League while Detroit is 6-15, 1-5.

Bedra hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning of the opener and sophomore pitcher Cheryl Cale picked up her second straight decision scattering 10 hits and striking out four.

In the nightcap, Danielle Chase allowed just eight hits and one unearned in a complete-game victory. Vanyi hit a two-run home run in the top of the third inning.

Owen to Navy

CANFIELD — Canfield High School senior Kelsey Owen will attend the United States Naval Academy where she will play volleyball.

Owen, who earned eight athletic letters in her high school career (four volleyball, four track), will attend the Naval Academy prep school in the fall and then enter the Naval Academy a year later.

A 3.9 student, Owen is a member of the National Honor Society and was a three-time all-MAC volleyball selection.

Bevilacqua to Vikings

CORTLAND — Lakeview High School senior Nicole Bevilacqua will attend Cleveland State where she will play soccer.

Bevilacqua earned eight athletic letters in her high school career — four in soccer and four in track. She was named first-team All-Ohio in soccer and ran in the state track meet three years.

Urey to Thiel

HUBBARD — Hubbard High School senior David Urey will attend Thiel College where he will play football.

Urey was a defensive back/ wideout/running back for the Eagles who reached the state playoffs.

Milestones reached

YOUNGSTOWN — Pat Gaia was honored by the Youngstown Umpires Association for 30 years of service as a member of the OHSAA.

Paul Marovich was honored for his 25 years of work and Steve Bada, Jr., Dick Bedio and Bruce Brungard were recognized for 20 years of service. Also, with 15 years, Ron Demesko was honored.

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. — Lorena Ochoa’s 8-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole caught the left lip and spun out of the cup, the story of her day. She still was tied for the lead Friday at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the story of her year.

Ochoa missed four birdie putts inside 10 feet that kept her from building a big lead halfway through the first major of the season, settling for a 1-under 71 that left her tied with Heather Young (70) at 5-under 139 at Mission Hills.

Mi Hyun Kim, a short hitter, was at an even greater disadvantage playing soft fairways and brick-hard greens.

HUMBLE, Texas — Johnson Wagner shot a 3-under 69 to take a three-stroke lead during the suspended second round of the Houston Open.

Wagner finished before an afternoon storm delayed play for 1 hour, 45 minutes.

•Cap Cana Championship

PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic — Mark Wiebe shot a course-record 5-under 67 to take a two-stroke lead in the Champions Tour’s Cap Cana Championship, the first pro golf event ever in the Dominican Republic.
