MINORITY HEALTH Events for month


Minority Health Month activities, funded by the Ohio Commission on Minority Health, are free and open to the public. Activities, their dates and locations, all in Youngstown, are:

Monday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Youngstown City Health District, 345 Oak Hill Ave. “Don’t Be Fooled About Your Health. Get the Facts,” health fair with various screenings, including HIV and mammograms, vendors and refreshments.

Tuesday, 9 a.m. to noon: Mahoning County Senior Center, 1110 Fifth Ave. “What’s Cookin’ for Diabetes Prevention,” Interactive healthy cooking, health screenings and demonstrations.

Saturday, noon to 4 p.m.: Association Neighborhood Centers, McGuffey Centre, 1649 Jacobs Road. “Hip Hop Rap Health Fair” for youth age 8-17; health screenings for families.

April 16, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.: Organizacion Civica y Cultural Hispana Americana, 3660 Shirley Road. “How to Cook with Low Sodium and Sugar” demonstration by dietitian; food samples.

April 18, 7 to 9 p.m.: McGuffey Centre, 1649 Jacobs Road. “Brothers Night Out” with Dr. David Davis who will speak on disease prevention and wellness.

April 19, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Wick Park Pavilion, 260 Park Ave. “Dance and Eat Smart for Your Heart,” learn to line dance and boxercise; information on hypertension, high blood sugar and cholesterol; learn to cook nourishing and tasty snacks.

April 22, 9 a.m. to noon: Mahoning County Senior Center, 1110 Fifth Ave. “Breast Cancer Prevention, Detection and Treatment,” exercise and cooking demonstrations and mammograms.

April 23, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Organizacion Civica y Cultural Hispana Americana, 3660 Shirley Road. “Hispanic Health Fair,” health screening and healthy snacks prepared by a dietitian.

April 23, noon to 3 p.m.: Fellowship Tabernacle Christian Center Church of God in Christ, 2139 Market St. “Women’s Health Empowerment Day,” health screenings and information on preventing stroke and hypertension.

April 24, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Youngstown City Odyssey School, 1384 Commonwealth St. “Don’t Be Fooled About Your Health. Get the Facts,” health screenings and information.

April 29 and 30, 7:55 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.: Athena School of Excellence for Girls, 164 W. Myrtle Ave. “Finding Common Ground: Health Choices for Teens,” self-esteem building through goal setting, promoting positive body image and strategies for impulse control and managing anger.

April 30, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.: St. Elizabeth Health Center, 1044 Belmont Ave. “Dance and Eat Smart for Your Heart,” health screening and information.
