McClendon honored for aid to community


YOUNGSTOWN — Migdalia “Maggie” Diaz McClendon of Youngstown is one of several recipients in the state of the Ohio Commission on Minority Health’s 2008 Shero/Hero of Health Award.

McClendon, a graduate of East High School, earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Youngstown State University, where she is an assistant director of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

McClendon, the mother of three, received the Shero/Hero of Health Award in recognition of her contributions toward narrowing health disparities, and for her leadership in the ethnic community.

According to the Ohio Commission on Minority Health, McClendon helps potential college students and their parents pursue higher education. She is a former board member of Organizacion Civica y Cultural Hispana American and the Mahoning County Treatment Alternatives to Street Crimes (TASC).

She has also volunteered as a bilingual radio announcer for two programs on 1500 AM, WGFT the Gift. They are: Contigo los Sabados” (meaning “With you on Saturdays”) and on Sundays, “Life on Life Terms,” an Ebony Lifeline support group on WYSU radio on the internet.
