Family Violence and Prevention: Facts and figures

Assessing the true scope of the problem in Ohio and nationwide is cumbersome because many behaviors occur in private and are often difficult to detect. Some state estimates:

Roughly 64,000 children were abused or neglected last year.

Around 166,000 people were physically or sexually assaulted by a partner.

About 29,000 elderly people suffered abuse or neglect.

Men who were sexually abused as children are more likely to abuse an adult partner.

Children who witness a family member being abused are consistent predictors of becoming perpetrators or victims.
