Obama’s ‘double life’ pointed out by hypocritical media
EDITOR:
In Thomas Sowell’s March 19 column, “Obama has been leading double life,” Sowell states that “God damn America” should never be uttered and cannot be taken out of context. The mass exploitation of small snippets from some of Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s sermons by mainstream (meaning white/European-American or Caucasian: your choice) media reveals the hypocrisy of the media in particular, and our voting population in general.
CNN, MSNBC, NBC, ABC, CBS and the infamously xenophobic FOX News have an agenda they need fulfilled by whipping the white masses into a frenzy or lynch mob against the prophetic Rev. Wright, and in proxy Sen. Barack Obama, who has enjoyed unprecedented popularity during this political cycle. Americans are told that the First Amendment to our U.S. Constitution protects free speech, protects our right to peacefully assemble and ensures religious tolerance. However, in all three circumstances, the media has trounced on constitutional rights of Rev. Wright and Sen. Barack Obama in the name of patriotism.
While observing this media fiasco, I was awestruck by the simplicity of the of Rev. Al Sharpton’s responses to Greta Van Susteren, a lawyer who became successful on FOX during the O. J. Simpson trial. Unflinchingly, Rev. Sharpton responded to his hostile inquisitor when asked about the Rev. Wright’s inflammatory and incendiary remarks. Calmly, pastor Sharpton simply returned her volley with pointed specific questions; “What did he [the Rev. Wright] say?” And “whom did Rev. Wright personally attack?” “True,” according to pastor Sharpton, “Rev Wright attacked the government” (an innate entity) for its actions and oppression towards people other than Europeans, but “whom specifically did Wright denigrate?” Sensing that Rev. Sharpton was not going along with the lynching program, Greta cut the interview short.
As we know, the most segregated hour of the week in this country is that during which many Americans attend church. The media will have you believe this is the time when we should declare our patriotism, instead of praising God. They also think that Americans should ignore their circumstances, history and nefarious things our country has done in the name of democracy. Contrary to belief, true journalists are objective and try not to influence public opinion. Additionally, responsible journalists, worth their salt, would have asked the white members of Trinity United Church of Christ, about their feelings concerning Pastor Wrght, his sermons and the ministry of their church.

Valley’s treasures end up as dust or in New York City
EDITOR:
A Vindicator article on March 10, “Reviving an icon of Idora,” praised someone else for reviving our treasure.
The carousel might have a home in New York City under the Brooklyn Bridge, overlooking Manhattan, but we have an empty field.
It was like salt on a wound for someone else to enjoy and the world to see our carousel.
Just like everything else, we have no sense of our history. We just discard it and have nothing to replace it.
The same thing happened with the Jeannette blast furnace at Brier Hill.
It was to have the Valley’s steel museum at the entrance and bus tours, so what did we do? We leveled it and put the steel museum across from St. Columba .
So many historic buildings are gone, many old churches that were built at the turn of the century are going.
People go to Europe to see these treasures, and we have them right here.
I guess I will see you in New York City, under the Brooklyn Bridge. Get a ticket and wait in line.
