Niles Indalex plant closes, leaving 23 jobless
NILES — Indalex Aluminum Solutions’ Niles plant has closed, leaving 23 employees out of work.
Scott Langdon, company spokesman, said the Henry Street plant that extruded aluminum for the truck trailer industry closed Friday because of a downturn in trailer construction.
Indalex closed its Girard plant in January, leaving 300 employees without work. It manufactured windows and doors for the construction market.
Those at the Niles plant will receive severance packages with the amount depending on their length of services and health benefits also based on employment years.
Asked if either plant could reopen, Langdon said, “We don’t see any immediate upturn in construction.”
The Niles plant that once employed 35 has been reducing its work force and workdays because of the downtown in demand for products. The need for truck trailers has decreased because of the surge in fuel prices, Langdon said.
The spokesman said Indalex will be working with state agencies to help the former workers with career counseling, job searches and r sum preparation.
