Red Sox 5, Athletics 0

OAKLAND, Calif. — Jon Lester pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning and David Ortiz broke open a scoreless game with a two-run homer for Boston. Kevin Youkilis had a double and a run-scoring single while setting the major league record for consecutive errorless games by a first baseman at 194, one more than Steve Garvey. The Red Sox defeated the A’s for the third time in four games that began last week in Japan. Jason Varitek added a ninth-inning homer for Boston. Lester (1-1) combined with Bryan Corey and Manny Delcarmen on a four-hitter. Ortiz was hitless in his first 12 at-bats this season before a fifth-inning single and followed with a homer off former Red Sox reliever Alan Embree (0-1).

Royals 4, Tigers 0

DETROIT — Brian Bannister (1-0) allowed two singles in seven innings, combining with Leo Nunez and Joakim Soria on a three-hitter — three singles by Edgar Renteria. Kansas City is 2-0 for the second time in 28 years. The Royals won their first nine games in 2003 en route to their only winning season since 1993. Detroit’s heralded offense has scored four runs in 20 innings. The Tigers moved one runner into scoring position Wednesday and are hitting .191 with 19 strikeouts through two games. Kenny Rogers (0-1) dropped to 0-5 in nine starts since he beat Cleveland last July 4. He allowed two runs and five hits in six innings.

Blue Jays 5, Yankees 2

NEW YORK — A.J. Burnett overpowered the Yankees on a cold night in the Bronx, and Vernon Wells hit a two-run homer off Mike Mussina. Alex Rodriguez hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot that chased Burnett with none out in the seventh. But the hard-throwing right-hander buzzed through New York’s potent lineup to that point, and the Blue Jays’ bullpen closed it out.

Orioles 9, Rays 6

BALTIMORE — Aubrey Huff drove in four runs to rally Baltimore past Tampa in front of the smallest crowd in Camden Yards history. Huff hit a two-run homer to bring the Orioles to 6-5 in the sixth inning, then doubled in two runs in the eighth to put Baltimore ahead for the first time.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Brewers 8, Cubs 2

CHICAGO — Jeff Suppan held Chicago to two runs and six hits in 61‚Ñ3 innings, Rickie Weeks homered on the game’s first pitch and Jason Kendall reached base five straight times to lead Milwaukee. Ryan Braun and ex-Cub Kendall — batting ninth — had three hits each in Milwaukee’s 14-hit attack. Suppan (1-0) gave up Derrek Lee’s home run leading off the fourth on a 41-degree day and left after allowing Geovany Soto’s home in the seventh. Chicago starter Ted Lilly (0-1) gave up four runs and five hits in 42‚Ñ3 innings as the Cubs dropped to 0-2.

Nationals 1, Phillies 0

PHILADELPHIA — Tim Redding took a one-hitter into the eighth inning and Ryan Zimmerman hit a solo homer to help Washington stay unbeaten. Redding (1-0) allowed just a single by Pedro Feliz in the second inning and walked three batters in seven innings. He outpitched Cole Hamels (0-1), who gave up one run and five hits in eight innings. Redding retired 14 straight batters after Feliz grounded a single to center. He walked Ryan Howard in the seventh and left after walking Geoff Jenkins to start the bottom of the eighth. Luis Ayala came in and retired the next three batters. Jon Rauch pitched a perfect ninth for his first save in two tries. Rauch got the win in the opener after blowing a save while filling in for ailing closer Chad Cordero.

Reds 6, Arizona 5

CINCINNATI — Edwin Encarnacion hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to give Cincinnati its first victory under manager Dusty Baker. Arizona took a 5-3 lead into the ninth on the strength of an impressive debut by right-hander Dan Haren, who doubled, scored a run, hit a sacrifice fly and pitched six innings. Brandon Lyon (0-1), who took over the closer role after Jose Valverde was traded in the offseason, came on and quickly gave it away. Brandon Phillips, who homered earlier, and Adam Dunn opened the ninth with singles. After Encarnacion failed to get down a sacrifice bunt, he hit his first homer of the season into the lower deck in left field. Left-hander Jeremy Affeldt (1-0) escaped a bases-loaded threat in the top of the ninth, putting him in position for the win.

Mets 13, Marlins 0

MIAMI — Ryan Church and David Wright each homered, Carlos Beltran had three doubles and New York pounded out 17 hits. Church had three hits and drove in three runs, and every Mets starting position player had at least one hit and scored at least once. Oliver Perez allowed five hits over six scoreless innings to pick up his a win in his season debut.
