Local Celtic singer to give free concert

SALEM — Celtic singer Colleen McNally Harris will give a free concert at 4 p.m. Sunday at Church of Our Saviour Episcopal Church, 870 State St.

Harris’ interest in music began as a first-grader, when she sang with the St. Dominic School Choir in Youngstown. That is where she was introduced to the sacred music of the Catholic Church and developed a love for a capella singing and Gregorian Chant.

“The intricate harmonies of the early music of the church is so very beautiful and sets the tone for prayer and contemplation,” she says in her biography.

Harris went on to become a cantor in the Cathedral of St. Columba for more than 12 years.

The Youngstown native released her first CD, “Celtic Grace,” last year. It features traditional songs of Ireland and Scotland, along with sacred selections such as “Amazing Grace” and “Ave Maria.” The album was produced and recorded at Tune Town Studios in Newton Falls and features local musicians Kirk Kupensky on Celtic harp and Dan Laginya on piano and vocals.

“My CD is also selling well on iTunes and I have sent copies to just about every state in the union and as far away as London, after advertising in an Irish newspaper,” said Harris. “My music is not the typical St. Patrick’s Day fare, so it fills a niche.”
