Campbell leaders focus on income tax renewal
CAMPBELL — Legislation to put a five-year renewal of 1 percent of the city’s 2 1‚Ñ2 percent income tax on the November election ballot was advanced to a third reading by city council Wednesday.
The ordinance, which was advanced by a 5-0 vote, is expected to come up for passage at council’s next regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. April 19. The 1 percent tax raises about $300,000 a year, said Mayor John Dill.
The mayor said renewal of the tax is very important to the city’s financial well-being because three-fourths of the 1 percent goes to the city’s general fund for items such as police and fire department expenses, equipment and capital improvements; and the other one-fourth is earmarked for operation and maintenance of parks.
If passed in November, the tax would be in effect for five years beginning June 1, 2009.
