Bond set in homicide

YOUNGSTOWN — Judge Robert P. Milich of Youngstown Municipal Court set bond for Reginald Everson, charged in a homicide on the city’s South Side, at $1 million at Everson’s video arraignment Wednesday.

Everson surrendered to police at 1 p.m. Tuesday and was taken to Mahoning County Jail.

Everson, 21, of West Chalmers Avenue, is charged with murder in the shooting death of 18-year-old Terrell L. Roland of East Avondale Avenue.

Roland was shot twice in his driveway Sunday afternoon and died that night at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Everson has been out of jail on a $15,000 bond since July 2007. He is charged with aggravated robbery in a case that involves the shooting death of an Auto Zone store clerk on the city’s East Side in May 2006. Two other men are charged with murder in that crime.

‘Knot Fairy’ author’s visit

YOUNGSTOWN — Award-winning author Bobbie Hinman will visit the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County’s main branch, 305 Wick Ave., at 10 a.m. Friday to read and sign her children’s book, “The Knot Fairy.”

On Saturday, she will appear at a library co-sponsored event, The Youngstown Area Book Fair, at Mill Creek MetroParks. Hinman’s inspiration for the book, a whimsical explanation for waking with tangles, came while brushing her grandchildren’s hair. She also is the author and co-author of seven cookbooks, including the “Lean and Luscious” and “The Meatless Gourmet” series.

Her next children’s book, “The Sock Fairy,” is set for release in June. This free program is for families of children ages preschool to second grade and is sponsored by the Friends of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.

Village council to meet

CRAIG BEACH — Village council will have a special meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the municipal building and will discuss establishing a special commission on energy, getting updated information on the Grandview Avenue sidewalks, street and culvert problems requiring repairs, issues involving the police and fire departments, and giving second and third readings to various ordinances.

Robbery, auto theft

SHARON — A burglary progressed into robbery and auto theft after a man woke in his bedroom to find a stranger shining a flashlight in his face, city police said.

The 73-year-old victim was awakened by the intruder about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday. Police said the burglar got in by breaking a window out of the front door. The stranger demanded money, threatening to harm the victim if he didn’t comply, police said. The victim tried to hit the intruder with his cane, but the burglar grabbed the cane away from him, police said. He took the victim’s wallet and keys and left.

Police said the man discovered his van was gone afterward. The man’s wallet contained about $60, police said.
