YOUNGSTOWN — YSU freshman guard Vytas Sulskis was named to the CollegeInsider.com’s Freshmen Mid-Major All-America basketball team.

Sulskis, who was named to the Horizon League’s All-Newcomer team, scored 270 points and grabbed 131 rebounds during his first season with the program.

He set a freshmen school record by making 46 3-pointers and attempting 121 shots from beyond the arc.

His 270 points were the most by a freshman since Doug Underwood had 290 in 2001-02.

Also, his 131 rebounds were the most by a freshman since Desmond Harrison (131) and Dave Brown (214) in 1997-98.

He also added 60 assists and 32 steals.

Arnold, Carpin honored in swimming

YOUNGSTOWN — Olivia Arnold and Amanda Carpin were honored as YSU’s swimming and diving most valuable players.

Arnold, a junior distance freestyle specialist from Rutherglen, Australia, was voted by her teammates as the swimming MVP. Carpin, a freshman diver from Erie, Pa., was voted the diving MVP.

Sophomore Leah Krout was honored as the team’s most improved swimmer.

Kusek named all hockey league

BOARDMAN — College Hockey Mid-America announced that YSU defenseman Zach Kusek earned a place on the All-Conference 2nd Team for the second consecutive season.

This season for the Penguins, Kusek was second on the team in scoring, racking up 12 goals and 15 assists.

Combined with the 42 points he scored a year ago, the Parma native has now collected 69 points in his collegiate career.

Women’s golf takes third in Cincinnati

CINCINNATI — The YSU women’s golf team placed third out of ten teams in the Cincinnati Invitational.

The Penguins carded a score of 992 (327-321-337), only behind Cincinnati and Butler. Cincinnati carded a 943 while Butler shot a 990.

The Penguins were lead by freshman Katie Rogner who tied for eighth with a three round total of 241 (81-78-82).

Patella commits

YOUNGSTOWN — Cardinal Mooney High senior linebacker Denny Patella has announced he has officially committed to play football at Youngstown State next fall.

Patella, a 6-0, 190 pounder, will probably play strong safety for the Penguins. He was a two-year letter winner for the Cardinals and was named to the first team of the All-Steel Valley Conference team last fall. Patella will be a preferred walk-on with the Penguins.

Ursuline Hall of Fame event is Thursday

YOUNGSTOWN— Ursuline High School will hold its athletic Hall of Fame induction dinner in special memory of Bob Miller Thursday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Social Hall at 6 p.m.

The 2008 slate of inductees is: Jerry Cox (1983), John Franken (’64), Frank McCarthy (’58), Bill Reali (’60) and Trevor Starghill (’94) for football; Matt Morgan (’97) for golf; Kisha Armour (’92) for track; track/football coach Jim Pannozzo (‘59) and Vince Mucci (posthumously) in the honorary category.

Kent State expected to pick Ford as coach

CLEVELAND — Kent State assistant Geno Ford is expected to take over the men’s basketball program, replacing Jim Christian, who resigned last week.

A person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press that Ford is expected to be introduced today. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because Ford’s contract has not been finalized. Christian left after six seasons to take over at TCU.

Ford inherits a program that won at least 20 games in each of the past 10 seasons.
