Suspect surrenders

YOUNGSTOWN — Reginald Everson, charged in a homicide Sunday on the city’s South Side, surrendered to Detective Sgt. Ramon Cox at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Everson, 21, of West Chalmers Avenue, is charged with murder in the shooting death of 18-year-old Terrell L. Roland of East Avondale Avenue.

Roland was shot twice in his driveway Sunday afternoon and died that night at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Everson arranged through his lawyer, Samuel G. Amendolara, to surrender. Everson was handcuffed and taken to the Mahoning County Jail, pulling up a black hoodie to cover his face as he left the police department.

His video arraignment is today in municipal court. Everson has been out of jail on a $15,000 bond since July 2007. He is charged with aggravated robbery in a case that involves the shooting death of an Auto Zone store clerk on the city’s East Side in May 2006. Two other men are charged with murder in that crime.

Partial power shutdown

COLUMBIANA — Several streets will be without power from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday to allow the city’s electric department to move a line along state Route 14. The move is preparation for the replacement of the bridge on state Route 14 located east of state Route 7. The streets that will be affected include Homestead Drive, Royal Birkdale, Aberdeen, Canterberry Court, Stonehaven Drive, Creek Road, Prestwick Court, Heck Road, and state Route 14 near the Firestone Farms development.

Online-school information

AUSTINTOWN — Ohio Connections Academy, a tuition-free, virtual public school, will have an information session at 6:30 p.m. today at Country Inn and Suites, 5570 Interstate Blvd. Interested families can meet with OCA’s certified teachers and parents with children enrolled in the school. The school opened in the fall of 2003 and serves about 1,000 Ohio children in kindergarten through 11th grade, with a 12th grade being added this fall. OCA met No Child Left Behind reading, math and overall Adequate Yearly Progress measures for the 2006-07 school year. The school loans each family a computer, reimburses them for an Internet connection and provides all curriculum materials. It supplies all of the necessary software and free technical support to ensure the computer is working properly, and each pupil is assigned a professional, Ohio-certified teacher to oversee learning and assess pupil progress.

Sheriff receives grant

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County Sheriff’s Department has received a $14,123 Marine Patrol Assistance Grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. It is one of 28 grants, totaling $564,564, to aid local communities in enforcing boating laws and maintaining safety on state waterways. This year’s marine patrol assistance grants range from a low of $7,778, awarded to Ohio State Parks for the Indian Lake water patrol, to a high of $32,000 each for the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District and the Summit County Sheriff’s Department, said Pamela S. Dillon, chief of the ODNR Division of Watercraft.

Theft from FuelMart

AUSTINTOWN — Police are investigating the theft of $820 in cash from the office at FuelMart, 5301 Seventy-Six Drive on Monday afternoon. An employee told police that the money was taken between 2 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. from a cash register in the gas station’s office. The employee turned over a videotape to police of the store and office area. The tape had not been viewed at the time the police report was filed.

Purse-snatching reported

BOARDMAN — A woman told police that her purse was taken by three men who threatened to shoot her when she got out of her car on Hillman Way. Three men, whom the victim described as in their 20s, approached her about 6:30 p.m. Monday as she got out of her car. The woman, 36, said that one of the men pulled at her purse, ordering her to give it to him. He shoved an object into her waist, telling her that it was a gun and he’d shoot her. The woman said she began yelling to cause a commotion when one of the other men said that she was making too much noise and told the first man to shoot her and get the purse. The woman gave the men the purse and they ran. The victim called police from a nearby apartment.

Counterfeit bill at store

AUSTINTOWN — The owner of the Golden Food Mart, 4290 New Road, reported Saturday that a man in his 30s received change for a counterfeit $50 bill March 25 at the store. The owner said it was the third time that week that someone tried to pass counterfeit money there. The bill was placed in the police evidence locker.

Weathersfield meeting

MINERAL RIDGE — A Records Retention Committee meeting for Weathersfield Township will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the township administration building.
