Notebook: SteelHounds vs. Eagles

Coming up: Game 4 will be played Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Hot dogs will be sold for $1. If necessary, Game 5 is set for Friday at 7:05 p.m. Games 6-7 are scheduled for April 8-9 in Loveland, Colo.

Signed: The SteelHounds have added forward Jimmy Russo to the roster for an amateur tryout. Russo, 23, played for four years at Northeastern University where he was a teammate of SteelHound defenseman Steve Birnstill. The 6-foot-0, 175-pound forward scored seven goals and six assists in 30 games this season for the Huskies. Russo replaces forward Jason Baird who is battling the flu. SteelHounds coach Kevin Kaminski expects Baird to be able to play on Thursday.

Return: Forward Adam Smyth played his first game in months for the SteelHounds after recovering from an arm injury. “He’s a big, physical forward,” SteelHounds coach Kevin Kaminski said. “Not too many guys wanted to go near him tonight. We look forward to him being a presence in front of the net on the power play.”

Two minutes for improper lineup? The Eagles’ first penalty was a bench infraction for submitting an “improper lineup.” Colorado coach Chris Stewart’s original lineup omitted captain Greg Pankewicz’s name. Off-ice officials said he then submitted a copy of the original with Pankewicz’s name written on it.

Power-play woes: The SteelHounds are struggling on the power-play. Chris Richards’ first-period goal was the only one they scored in six chances. Youngstown is 3-for 27 with the man-advantage in the postseason. Colorado, on the other hand, scored twice in seven chances and is 7-for-21.

Saves: SteelHounds goaltender Andy Franck made 16 saves on the 19 shots he faced. Eagles goalie Sebastien Laplante stopped 24 of Youngstown’s 25 attempts.

Meltdown: The Chevrolet Centre’s ice-making machinery malfunctioned Monday night, causing the ice to melt. Both teams arrived at the rink for late-morning skates that were canceled as the ice was rebuilt for the game.
