Baseball change

STRUTHERS — Today the Penguin baseball team will play against Bowling Green at Cene Park at 2 p.m.

The Penguins and Falcons have each won three games in the all-time series after YSU won 7-5 last season.

Senior right-hander Adam Kalafos will go for his second straight victory for the Penguins against the 11-7 Falcons.

Ursuline beats Poland

STRUTHERS — Alex DeMario socked a triple and single and drove in two runs while starter Mark Lapikas and reliever Shawn Roman combined to pitch a seven-hitter, as the Ursuline High baseball team defeated Poland, 8-5, in a season opener for both teams Monday at Cene Park.

Paul Cene added two RBIs, Joe Wielbruda two singles and one RBI and Nick McCartney two singles to aid the Irish, who rapped 11 hits.

Mark Turnbull had a double and three RBIs for Poland.

Volunteers sought

YOUNGSTOWN — Wick Neighbors Inc., 323 Wick Ave., is seeking volunteers to assist at the fifth annual Smoky Hollow 5K Run and one-mile Family Fun Walk, which is scheduled from 7:30 to 11 a.m. July 12.

Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks including registration and distributing water bottles. All volunteers will receive a 2008 race T-shirt and may attend a brunch after the race.

Cruse is selected

WEXFORD, Pa. – Bethany College sophomore Matt Cruse was selected as the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Men’s Track Athlete of the Week.

A week after earning All-American status by finishing fourth in the 55 hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Track Championships, Cruse earns the PAC honor after qualifying for the ECAC Outdoor Championships in two events.

He took first place in the 110 hurdles at the Wheeling Jesuit Invitational by breaking the tape in 15.21 seconds, more than a half-second better than the ECAC qualifying standard (15.84).

Hall of fame grows

The Quad County Coaches Association have inducted four additional members into their Hall Of Fame.

The new members are Glen Suthern (East Palestine, Minerva and East Liverpool high schools); Mike Ward (United and Lisbon); John DeRenzio (Springfield Local) and Ken Woods (Stanton Local - now part of Edison Local - and Wellsville).

NFL schedules

PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Indianapolis Colts will open Lucas Oil Stadium with a prime-time game against the Chicago Bears on the NFL’s opening weekend.

The Sept. 7 rematch of the 2007 Super Bowl won by the Colts will be played Sunday night in the new $700 million stadium in Indianapolis. NBC will televise the game.

The Colts plans to play preseason games in the 63,000-seat ballpark in August.

Also on the opening weekend schedule is a prime-time Monday doubleheader on ESPN, with Minnesota visiting the Brett Favre-less Green Bay Packers at 7 p.m. EDT and Denver at Oakland at 10:15 p.m. EDT.

Previously reported was the Thursday night season opener hosted by the New York Giants. The Super Bowl champions will play Washington, with an earlier-than-usual starting time of 7 p.m. EDT in deference to the final night of the Republican Convention.

The rest of the NFL schedule will be announced later in April.

Lopez twins turn pro

The Lopez twins are going pro together.

Stanford sophomore Robin Lopez is joining his 7-foot brother Brook in entering the NBA draft.

The brothers made their announcement to The Associated Press on Monday through mother, Deborah Ledford.

It was expected that Brook would declare himself eligible for the NBA, but Robin was not so certain. They were prep stars in Fresno, Calif., and came to Stanford together. Now they will depart as a tandem, too.

Dog to recover

TACOMA, Wash. — The veterinarian treating Iditarod champion Lance Mackey’s sled dog Zorro says he will make a full recovery from injuries suffered when he was hit by a snowmobile.

However, Kobi Johnson, an Iditarod trail veterinarian, believes Zorro’s racing days are probably over. The 9-year-old faces weeks of recovery from four broken ribs and severe bruising suffered when he was hit Friday by the snowmobile near Nome, at the end of the 408-mile All Alaska Sweepstakes.
