Bad and Good

Here are some of the comments from the report by A & I Studio of East Liverpool on renovation or construction involving the county’s Department of Job & Family Services, the board of elections and Veterans Services.

Renovate the JFS

Bad: Lacks parking, when about 220 spaces are needed, the building is “nearing the end of its life cycle, and the ‘bones’ of the building are old and not in good condition.” The roof, gutters and drains would have to be replaced, some walls appear to be unstable, windows and doors would have to be replaced, and the entire building needs a new fire protection system, all new lighting and almost all new heating and cooling.

Good: The building is a known destination for its clients, it’s close to county offices, the county already owns it, and the agency contributes to the downtown economy.

IGA site

Bad: Not county owned and could only provide about 110 parking spaces even if the present DJ FS is torn down for parking.

Good: The site can help the economy and is close to the present site. If the IGA is torn down, a new building would meet codes.

Dickey Drive

Bad: Removes workers and clients about one mile from downtown.

Good: Allows for different building configurations, will have a longer life than an older, renovated building, and won’t interrupt work at the JFS.
