Shivers sisters run 1-2, Salem retains crown


COLUMBIANA — Sisters Lauren and Liz Shivers placed first (19 minutes, 12 seconds) and second (19:22.8), respectively, helping Salem High School to defend successfully its girls title with 34 points at the Clipper Invitational cross country meet Saturday.

Cuyahoga Falls A finished second with 83 points and Mooney was third with 92 in the field of 19 schools.

Eight girls ran the 5,000-meter run under 20 minutes.

Chrissy Zimmerman (19:28.7) of Cuyahoga Falls finished third and she was followed by Samantha Hamilton (19:40.1) of Jackson-Milton, Stephanie Case (19:46.1) of Columbiana, Christina Oles (19:46.4) of Cardinal Mooney, Sarah Yerkey (19:51.1) of Salem and Katie Heney (19:59.1) of Boardman.

Cuyahoga Falls’ gold team won the boys title with 41 points. Jefferson Area was second with 72 and Boardman’s black team was third with 132 in the field of 21 schools.

The Spartans’ Matt Moore won the Clipper boys run in a course and meet record of 16 minutes. Nate Slaughter (16:03) of Cuyahoga Falls was second, teammate Mike Baxter (16:09) was third and Robert Zanni (16:25) of Struthers was fourth.

Bryce Pulley (16:26) and Tim Kyer (16:47) of Cuyahoga Falls placed fifth and sixth and Aaron Sutton (16:56) of Howland was seventh.
