Girard stays in first with 26-21 victory


Liberty and Hubbard won easily to remain a game back of the Indians and Lakeview.

CHAMPION — Trailing 21-20 with 1:26 remaining, sophomore running back Mike Floravit scored from 2 yards out Friday to give the Girard High football team a 26-21 victory over Champion.

Champion held a 21-7 lead at halftime.

Kyle Stadelmyer scored three touchdowns, including two via pass from Girard quarterback Adam Charles.

Charles completed 23 of 41 for 302 yards for the Indians.

The Indians are 4-2 and remain tied with Lakeview with 3-0 records in the Trumbull Athletic Conference.

Chris Wildman scored twice on long runs for Champion, which was hurt by penalties, especially in the last five minutes.

Markel Vaughn also tallied for Champion (3-3, 0-3) when he caught a 22-yard pass from Joe Cvengros as the first half ended.

LaBrae 6

LIBERTY — Ira Cross scored two touchdowns, one on a 58-yard run as Liberty (5-1, 2-1 TAC) coasted past LaBrae.

Ryan Pennington had an 87-yard touchdown run.

Fitzgerald Toussaint added a pair of touchdowns, one on a 71-yard pass from Justin Machamer and the other on a 45-yard scamper.

The Leopards finished with 247 rushing yards.

LaBrae (3-3, 1-2 TAC) scored in the final quarter on a 27-yard run by Todd Collins.

Newton Falls 14

HUBBARD — Robert Wigfall scored three touchdowns for the Eagles (3-3, 2-1). His scores covered 6, 54 and 50 yards.

Marc Kanetsky hit Mike Carnahan with a 21-yard scoring toss and David Urey with a 26-yarder. Andre Taylor scored on a 43-yard run.
