Lordstown GM plant to get two new cars
LORDSTOWN — General Motors plans to build two new car models in Lordstown, but even more could be coming.
Union leaders at the plant told workers Friday that GM plans to build the successors to the Chevrolet Aveo and Pontiac G6 at the plant.
“This might be just the beginning,” said Joe Langley, an analyst at CSM Worldwide in Detroit.
The new cars will be built from two new underbody platforms that GM is introducing. Other new models will be built on those platforms, and at least one of those could come to Lordstown, Langley said.
The local plant seems to have head start on other plants, he said. It is the first plant that’s been named worldwide for a product from the new midsize platform, and the first North American plant slated to receive a model from the new small car platform, Langley said.
The change starts in 2009, said a flier put out by United Auto Workers Local 1112. Production of the Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 would stop and work would begin on the Aveo replacement. Production on the G6 replacement would begin the following year.
