GM-Lordstown gets two new car models

LORDSTOWN — General Motors is bringing two new models to its Lordstown assembly plant, a source said.

The plant will build a new small car on its Gamma platform beginning in 2009, said the GM employee, who didn’t want to be named. The Gamma platform is being used for the car that will replace the current Chevrolet Aveo.

In 2010, the plant will add a larger car based on GM’s Alpha platform, the source said. The Alpha platform is being used for the car that will replace the current Pontiac G6.

The plant’s current products, the Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5, are scheduled for production through June 2009. They are sized between the Aveo and G6.

Word about the new models for Lordstown is coming out today as local union presidents from around the country gathered in Detroit to hear details about a tentative labor agreement reached this week between GM and the United Auto Workers.
