PREP PREVIEW This week’s other games
MASSILLON PERRY (4-1, 2-0 Federal)
vs. BOARDMAN (3-2, 1-1)
Game time: 7:30 p.m. at Boardman Stadium.
Last meeting: Perry won, 22-10, in 2006.
Notebook: This game hinges on how well the Spartans rebound from last week’s 38-7 loss to North Canton Hoover. After opening the season with a lopsided loss to St. Ignatius, the Spartans won three straight games, including a 28-0 defeat of Massillon Jackson in Week 4. The Spartans’ offense revolves around running backs Cameron Shaffer and Damien Jarrett, who are replacing injured Tyler Amendola (knee injury). The Spartans’ defense must tighten up its pass coverage after allowing Hoover quarterback Jared Wackerly to pass for 387 yards and four touchdowns.
CANTON MCKINLEY (1-4, 1-2 Federal)
vs. FITCH (1-4, 0-2)
Game time: 7:30 p.m. at Falcon Stadium, Austintown.
Last meeting: McKinley won, 28-7, in 2006.
Notebook: These aren’t the fearsome Bulldogs of yore. Since defeating Chaney on opening night, the Falcons are struggling. In last week’s 35-14 loss to Massillon Perry, the Falcons were limited to 77 yards rushing. Sophomore quarterback Jon Ballard completed 19 of 28 tosses for 227 yards. Chris Smaldino caught six of them for 83 yards.
LOWELLVILLE (3-2, 2-0 ITCL Tier 2)
vs. LEETONIA (3-2, 2-0)
Game time: 7 p.m. at Leetonia High.
Last meeting: Leetonia won, 44-6, in 2006.
Notebook: The winner will remain in first place in the Inter Tri-County League Tier Two standings. After losing twice to open the season, the Rockets have won three straight, including 14-7 last week over Southern. Cody Whinery rushed for 55 yards and scored both touchdowns while Vince Travaline gained 73 yards on 12 carries. After a big win over Lisbon to open the season, the Bears lost twice then won twice. Last week, the Bears hung on for a 27-21 win over Wellsville. Jake Kruegel rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown.
LAKEVIEW (3-2, 2-0 TAC)
vs. BROOKFIELD (4-1, 1-1)
Game time: 7 p.m. at Brookfield.
Last meeting: The Warriors won, 28-21, in double overtime in 2006.
Notebook: The Bulldogs are coming off a huge 28-13 win over Hubbard and need the win to keep their hopes for a Trumbull Athletic Conference crown alive. Ben Moody scored two touchdowns while Vinnie Elias and Justin Wazelle rushed for the others. The Warriors are coming off a 28-14 victory over Newton Falls. Dave Nehlen rushed for 50 yards and scored twice. He also completed a 44-yard touchdown pass to Devin O’Brien.
