International Truck work
to be suspended Monday

SPRINGFIELD — Work on the assembly line at International Truck & Engine Corp.’s plant will be suspended indefinitely Monday as a precaution in case employees go on strike, the company said Wednesday. The work will be shifted to plants in Texas and Mexico, International spokesman Roy Wiley said.

The Warrenville, Ill.-based company wants to ensure an uninterrupted supply of trucks to its customers, he said. A total of 768 employees represented by the United Auto Workers will be affected by the shutdown.

Chevron announces
3-year stock buyback

SAN FRANCISCO — Enriched by high oil prices, Chevron Corp. will spend up to $15 billion buying back its own stock — a commitment that pleased shareholders and rankled critics clamoring for bigger investments in projects that might help lower energy costs.

The three-year repurchase program announced Wednesday served as yet another reminder of the cash cascading into the oil industry while motorists have been trying to cope with higher gasoline bills.
