Salem, McDonald win county crowns


Maplewood’s girls also won a county championship.

COLUMBIANA — The Salem High girls cross country team put four athletes in the top seven spots to win the Columbiana County cross country championship Tuesday,

The Quakers took first place with 23 points. United was second with 53.

Leighann Kelvington (20 minutes, 10.8 seconds) of East Palestine took first place over the 5,000-meter course.

The Quakers’ Lauren Shivers (20:27.1), Liz Shivers (20:28.3), Sarah Yerkey (20:37.3) and Lexi Shivers (22:18) placed second, third, fourth and seventh, respectively.

Stephanie Case (21:19.9) of Columbiana was fifth and Elizabeth Kelvington (21:38.6) of East Palestine was sixth.

Josh Boyer (18:13.6) and Jake Boyer (18:28.5) finished third and fifth, respectively, as they led East Liverpool to the boys title with 35 points. United was second with 59 and Salem third with 64.

Ted Yuhaniak of the Quakers won the boys run in 17 minutes, 47.2 seconds. Joe Karmanzin (18:00) of United was second and Tyler Freeland (18:21.6) of Lisbon was fourth.

Trumbull County meet

MCDONALD — The McDonald High boys put five of its athletes in the top 10 as the Blue Devils raced to the championship with 24 points in the Trumbull County meet.

T. J. Holland of the Blue Devils won over the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 44.5 seconds. McDonald’s Jerry Dugan (17:51.9) was second while Frank Natoli (18:14.4) and Lance Ronghi (18:29.6) were fourth and eighth, respectively.

Lakeview placed second with 66 points. Maplewood was third with 92.

Aaron Sutton (18:05) of Howland placed third, while Jacob DiEugenio (18:20.8) of Lordstown was fifth.

The girls run was won by Maplewood with 55 points. Lakeview was a close second with 63 and McDonald finished third with 100.

Audrey Maheu of Warren JFK, who placed fourth last year, took first place in the race with a time of 20 minutes, 26 seconds.

Elissa Yoder (22:45) took fifth place for the Rockets, while teammate Crystal Williams (22:55) was seventh.

Amber Cross (22:36) of Mineral Ridge was third. Nicole Taddei (22:22.7), Lyndsae Vine (22:43.9) and Jamie Legendre (22:50.1), all seniors, were second, four and sixth respectively for Lakeview.
