Buckeyes-Purdue
to play under lights

COLUMBUS — Ohio State will be playing in yet another primetime game at Purdue on Oct. 6, the Big Ten confirmed on Monday.

The Buckeyes, already scheduled to play under the lights on Saturday at Minnesota and at Penn State on Oct. 27, will be playing the Boilermakers at 8 p.m.

The teams, both unbeaten so far, had to wait to announce the game time until hearing from ABC, which will televise the game.

The game was expected to be played at night but that wasn’t a certainty until the Big Ten’s announcement.

Sycamores fire West;
rehire former coach

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Indiana State fired football coach Lou West on Monday and rehired as interim coach the man who led the Sycamores to their last winning season more than a decade ago.

West, a former defensive coordinator at Toledo, was 1-25 since taking over the Sycamores in 2005. His only win was against Missouri State last year, and Indiana State dropped to 0-4 this season after a 54-20 home loss to Eastern Illinois on Saturday night.

West will be reassigned within the university, athletic director Ron Prettyman said.

West is a native of Niles.

“I appreciate Lou’s dedication to his players and his staff, along with his efforts to enhance our program,” Prettyman said. “With that being said, I have not seen progress in the football program that we had all hoped for.”

Prettyman said a search for a new coach would begin immediately.

In the meantime, former Sycamores coach Dennis Raetz will return to the team.

Raetz, who won 94 games in 18 years with the Sycamores, stepped down after the 1997 season and retired as associate athletic director in June. He had been working as a scout for the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League.

Indiana State’s most recent winning season was 6-5 under Raetz in 1996.

U. S. expects struggle
against Brazil

TIANJIN, China — United States women’s soccer coach Greg Ryan is bracing for Brazil. He knows the rough semifinal will be smoothed only a bit by the artistry of Marta, the game’s best female player.

The Americans have ambitions for a third World Cup title, following ones in 1991 and ’99. Brazil is in the semifinals for the second time, matching its run in 1999.

The Americans, top-ranked and undefeated in 51 games, advanced Saturday by beating England 3-0 on goals by Abby Wambach, Shannon Boxx and captain Kristine Lilly.
