Cene leads Ursuline to sectional golf crown


VIENNA — Ursuline High won the Division II boys golf sectional tournament Monday at Candywood Golf Club.

The Irish shot a team score of 313 to outdistance runner-up Hubbard (329). West Branch (335) and Liberty (357) also qualified for the district tournament Oct. 2 at Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Ravenna.

Four individuals not on the qualifying teams also advanced — Cory Hines of LaBrae (75), Dave Kephart of Brookfield (77), Kyle Firm of Campbell Memorial (78) and Nathan King of Champion (79).

Ursuline was led by Paul Cene, who was the event medalist with a 74. Jake Detec shot 77, James Daley 80, Ryan Alders 82 and Zach Humphries 86.

For Hubbard, Steve Zubyk and Andrew Wolf shot 81s, Josh Dunch had 82 and Brandon Studer and Joe Takash finished with 85s.

West Branch’s Shawn Linder and Mike Barnes fired 82s, Mickey Manser and Clinton Justice added 83s and Michael Sellaroli finished with an 88.

For Liberty, Jeff Blais scored 79, followed by Ben Baroff (83), Frank Ferry (84), Michael Bentz (88) and Jeff Worona (90).
