Soccer team blanked

YOUNGSTOWN — Bowling Green's (3-4-1) offense was too much for YSU’s (1-8) defense as the soccer team lost 3-0 Sunday.

The game was scoreless for the first 45 minutes of play.

BGSU forward Jackie Tamerlano ignited her team's offense in the second half with a goal at 49:03. Corbie Yee got the assist.

Tamerlano then scored off another assist from Jen Czapka at the 57 minute mark to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead.

Mariah Snyder played her first full game as goalkeeper for the Penguins collecting 13 saves.

Snyder did not allow any more scores until the last seven seconds of the match when Megan Moran knocked in BG's final goal.

Tessa Brookman and Taylor Pickens each had a shot for YSU in the second half while Lauren Brennan recorded a shot on goal.

The soccer team will host St. Francis (Pa.) on Friday evening at 7 p.m.

Senior bowling event

HUBBARD — Entry forms are available for the eighth annual Youngstown Senior Team bowling tournament at Bell-Wick Bowl, Oct. 13-14 and Oct. 20-21.

The United States Bowling Congress-certified event is open to men (age 55 and over) and women (age 50 and over). A $500 first-place team prize will be based on 40 entries. Cost is $70 per team. Call Ted Bundy (330) 770-8161.

Mathews soccer bows

VIENNA — The Jefferson boy’s soccer team scored the final two goals in a 3-2 win over Mathews.

Jake Klinger scored first off an assist by Timmy McLaughlin to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.

After Jefferson tied it at 1-all, freshman Kevin Moyer scored to give Mathews (4-3-1) a 2-1 lead at the half.

Jefferson senior goalie Greg Buchan, who ended with 13 saves, kept the Mustangs scoreless in the second half.

Nathan Nasca and Codi Pilkington scored in the final 40 minutes for Jeferson (1-4-1).

Boardman girls tennis
team wins tournament

DOVER — Boardman High girls tennis team put on a dominating performance over the weekend in winning the Dover Invitational Tournament.

The Spartans captured four of the five events and finished runner-up in the fifth as they totaled 28 team points to easily outdistance second place Massillon Jackson (16 points).

Boardman won all three singles positions as Carolyn Jesko at No. 1, Emily Abraham at No. 2 and Annie Jesko No. 3 each went 3-0.

The No. 2 doubles team of Kayleigh Drummond and Meran Halaweh also was perfect in three matches, while the No. 1 doubles team of Randi Yasvac and Alyssa Tesone won their first two matches, but fell to Jackson in the final match.

The other teams were New Philadelphia (15 points), West Holmes (11), Dover (7), North Royalton (5), Canton McKinley (2) and Westerville South (2).

Girard homecoming

GIRARD — The Girard High School marching band is inviting all former band members, majorettes and flag line alumni to join them for pre-game and halftime performances at the homecoming football game between Girard and Hubbard on Oct. 5.

DeFrank set to fight

GIRARD — Alecia (Foutz) DeFrank of Girard is set to fight on Sept. 29 in Imperial, Pa.

The 23-year-old DeFrank (3-1) will battle 21-year-old Katie Banks (3-3).

Their 125-pound bout is one of 14 on an otherwise all-male card that begins at 7 p.m. at the Imperial Fire Hall.

“She’s hoping to bring home a win while Kelly Pavlik brings home a championship,” Rocky DeFrank, Alecia’s husband, said of his wife’s fight the same night as the Youngstown middleweight’s.

Davis selected

WARREN — Aunre Davis, junior quarterback for the Warren Harding varsity football team has been chosen Steel Valley Conference player of the week.

Davis rushed for 138 yards on 16 carries, scoring four touchdowns and he completed 2-of-7 passes for 22 yards as the Raiders topped Lima Senior 35-20.

Sports hall to meet

WARREN — The Trumbull County Sports Hall of Fame will meet Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Buena Vista Cafe.

Rob Schmidt, assistant athletic director of marketing and promotion of Youngstown State University will be guest speaker.
