UAW goes on strike


LORDSTOWN — The United Auto Workers of went on strike today against General Motors Corp.

Workers came streaming out of the GM complex here at 11 a.m., the strike deadline.

Workers then made their way to the UAW 1112 union hall to find out what exactly is going on and signing up for picket duty.

There are about 2,500 workers at the assembly plant and 1,100 at the fabricating plant.

The UAW currently represents 73,000 GM workers at 82 U.S. facilities nationwide, including assembly and parts plants and warehouses. They will be paid $200 a week plus medical benefits from the UAW’s strike fund. The union had more than $800 million in that fund as of last November, according to the UAW’s Web site.
