MLB ROUNDUP Sunday’s other games

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Angels 7, Mariners 4

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Macier Izturis and Casey Kotchman homered in the third inning and that was enough for John Lackey (18-9), who held Seattle to two runs in seven innings and led the Angels to the West pennant. Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth for his 38th save in 43 chances. Jeff Weaver (7-13) gave up five runs and five hits.

Devil Rays 5, Red Sox 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Struggling knuckleballer Tim Wakefield gave up a two-run homer to Delmon Young. Wakefield (16-12) entered 9-0 at Tropicana Field and 19-2 overall against the Devil Rays, but he gave up four runs and seven hits in five innings. Tampa Bay’s Al Reyes pitched a perfect ninth for his 25th save in 29 opportunities.

Yankees 7, Blue Jays 5

NEW YORK — Mike Mussina won his 250th game, backup catcher Jose Molina had three hits and three RBIs and Joba Chamberlain got his first career save on his 22nd birthday for New York. New York overcame a 3-0 deficit and reached 90 wins for the seventh straight season, the third-longest streak in major league history behind the 1947-58 Yankees and 1904-12 Chicago Cubs, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The Yankees broke through for three runs in the fifth off Dustin McGowan (11-10) on RBI singles from Robinson Cano, Doug Mientkiewicz and Molina. Mussina (11-10) won his third consecutive start since he rejoined the Yankees’ rotation, allowing three runs and seven hits in seven innings and improving to 23-11 against Toronto.

Tigers 7, Royals 2

DETROIT — Justin Verlander earned his 18th win and Marcus Thames homered twice for Detroit. Verlander (18-6) allowed two runs, five hits and two walks in six innings. He has 35 wins in his first two full seasons, the most for a Tigers pitcher since Frank Lary also had 35 from 1955-56. Detroit scored four runs off Jorge De La Rosa (8-12) in the first and never looked back.

Twins 7, White Sox 1

MINNEAPOLIS — Kevin Slowey pitched seven strong innings, helping Torii Hunter go out a winner in what might have been his last home game for Minnesota. Garrett Jones hit his first career homer, Michael Cuddyer drove in four runs and Slowey (4-0) struck out a career-high nine batters.

Rangers 3, Orioles 0

ARLINGTON, Texas — Kevin Millwood pitched seven scoreless innings for his 10th victory and Michael Young moved closer to another 200-hit season for Texas. Millwood (10-13) scattered seven hits, struck out five, walked none and was helped by two inning-ending double plays.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Rockies 7, Padres 3

SAN DIEGO — The Padres lost two outfielders to injuries — including Milton Bradley in a bizarre sequence after he was ejected. Garrett Atkins hit an inside-the-park home run, Brad Hawpe homered for the second time in three games and Jeff Francis earned his 17th victory for the Rockies, who roughed up Greg Maddux (13-11) to win their season-high eighth straight. Bradley was ejected and then injured his right knee during the eighth inning. Padres center fielder Mike Cameron came out in the seventh inning with a bruised right thumb and index finger after he tumbled going after Atkins’ fly ball and had his hand stepped on by Bradley, the left fielder.

Nationals 5, Phillies 3

WASHINGTON — Austin Kearns went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Nationals. Cole Hamels made only his second start since being on the disabled list with a strained pitching elbow, and he was removed after 74 pitches, with Philadelphia ahead 2-1. Antonio Alfonseca (5-2) replaced Hamels and gave up two runs and two hits, getting only one out. Geoff Geary relieved him and hit the first batter he faced, Jesus Flores, to force in a run and put Washington ahead 3-2. Flores left the game with a bruised left elbow and was listed as day to day.

Dodgers 7, Diamondbacks 1

PHOENIX — Chad Billingsley limited Arizona to one run in 52⁄3 innings. Juan Pierre had four hits and James Loney added three, including a two-run homer, to help Los Angeles stop a seven-game losing streak. Billingsley (12-5) allowed five hits, walked four and struck out six. Arizona starter Edgar Gonzalez (8-3) allowed three runs and eight hits in 31⁄3 innings.

Braves 7, Brewers 4

ATLANTA — Manager Ned Yost was ejected during Atlanta’s four-run rally in the seventh inning. The Brewers took a 4-1 lead into the seventh. Edgar Renteria doubled and scored on a two-out wild pitch by Claudio Vargas (11-5). Rookie Manny Acosta (1-1) pitched a scoreless seventh for his first win in the majors. Rafael Soriano, the sixth pitcher used by Atlanta, worked the ninth to earn his ninth save in 12 chances.

Mets 7, Marlins 6, 11 innings

MIAMI — David Wright singled home the decisive run in the 11th inning and two shaky Mets relievers finally protected the lead. Carlos Delgado’s three-run homer highlighted a four-run eighth that gave New York a 6-3 lead, but Florida rallied against Aaron Heilman and closer Billy Wagner to force extra innings. Joe Smith (3-1) pitched a scoreless 10th and got the win. Harvey Garcia (0-1) took the loss.

Giants 5, Reds 4

SAN FRANCISCO — Pedro Feliz hit a tying homer during a five-run sixth inning for the Giants. Eliezer Alfonzo singled in the go-ahead run in the sixth. Randy Messenger (2-4) got one out to earn the win. Scott Atchison and Tyler Walker each worked a scoreless inning before Brian Wilson pitched the ninth for his sixth save in six chances.

Cardinals 4, Astros 3
