‘Volley for the Cure’ set Tuesday at Boardman

The teams will be wearing special pink jerseys.

BOARDMAN — Boardman High School’s volleyball team will entertain the Austintown Fitch squad Tuesday in a Federal League match with a purpose that goes beyond the realm of spikes, digs and dinks.

The teams will be wearing special pink jerseys, using a pink and white ball and playing in front of fans being asked to purchase pink T-shirts.

The match, entitled “Volley for the Cure,” is being played to raise funds for the cure of breast cancer.

Proceeds from T-shirt sales at both schools, concessions, 50-50 raffle and other donations, are going to the Susan B. Komen Foundation.

Originally, the match, the second between the teams this season, was scheduled to be played at Fitch.

“Fitch was gracious enough to switch and play this at Boardman,” said Boardman coach Glenn Sivak.

Boardman’s junior varsity coach, Alyssa Calautti, decided to introduce the match/fund raiser locally after being exposed to the idea at a state volleyball clinic in August.

“It only seemed logical to schedule it against our favorite and local rival — Fitch,” Calautti said.

“Both communities have always had strong support in their respective cancer walks. I see no reason why both communities will not support our youth in this cause as well,” Sivak said.

The freshman match starts at 4 p.m. with the junior varsity match slated for 5:30. The varsity teams will follow.
