Rovnak aids Witt’s goal in Poland win


Mooney’s boys and Ursuline’s girls posted victories.

BOARDMAN — Senior forward Brian Witt scored the game’s only goal on an assist from junior midfielder Ryan Rovnak to lead Poland to a 1-0 victory over Boardman in a boys soccer game Saturday.

Andrew McElroy added five saves for the Bulldogs (8-1-2), who held a 12-5 edge in shots.

Ryan Giambatista had 11 saves for the Spartans.

JVs: Poland 1-0.

STRUTHERS — Matt McWilson scored both goals as Cardinal Mooney improved to 8-1-1.

The Cardinals, ranked No. 4 in Division II, also got assists from Leo Hicks and Timothy Beck. John Critell had four saves in goal.

Bloom-Carroll, ranked No. 9 in Division III, fell to 7-2.

Ursuline 5, Madison 0

YOUNGSTOWN — Katelyn Tondo-Steele scored twice for the Irish (7-0-1) in a non-league game at the Wick Recreation Area.

Kaila Buckley, Hannah Snyder and Kelsey Price added lone goals for the Irish. Madison (3-3) trailed 2-0 at the break.

Fitch 2, Hubbard 0

AUSTINTOWN — Sammie Shaffer and Melissa Byrdy each scored a goal for the Falcons (6-3-2). Shaffer had an assist.

Fitch had 13 shots on goal and Hubbard (5-5) had five.

Ali Tolich, goalie, had four saves for the Falcons. Miriah Gordon had six saves for the Eagles.

North Canton Hoover 1, Canfield 0

NORTH CANTON — Jackie Nicodemo had the only goal of the game early in the second half on an assist from Alyssa Marulli to give Hoover the win.

Hoover (8-2) goalie Taylor Maceyak had four saves.

Canfield (3-5-2) goalie Anokha Pasubidri had three saves.

JVs: 1-1 tie.

Champion 3, Newton Falls 0

NEWTON FALLS — Junior Heather Beachy had two goals and junior Erica Stevens had another for Champion (5-3-2).

Beachy’s first goal came late in first half to give the Golden Flashes a 1-0 halftime lead. Stevens’ score came about halfway through the second half. Beachy’s second goal was on a corner kick late in the game.

Newton Falls goalie Rebecca Humberger had 15 saves, while Champion goalie Beth Sayers had six stops.

Newton Falls is 3-6.

Badger 2, Girard 0

Jenna Miller scored on an assist by Maddie Anthony in the first half and Cara Prior added a goal in the second half off of a corner kick from Taylor Phillips.

Katy Dvorak had seven saves for Badger (7-4-1) while Mellisa Weitzman had six for the Indians.
