MOUNT NOTEBOOK \ News and notes
M Club inductees: Mount Union inducted five new members into its M Club Hall of Fame. The new honorees were Chris Weber (football), Larry Reeder (football and track), Maria (Scheiber) Campbell (swimming), Dave Forshew (track) and Patrick Helmuth (swimming). Michael Muffet, Sue Deas and Michael Gallina were the M Club 2007 Award of Excellence recipients.
Winning streak: Mount Union has won 26 straight games, which is the second longest streak in the NCAA behind Division II Grand Valley State, which has 30 consecutive wins dating back to 2004. The Purple Raiders will carry a 62-game road victory streak into next week’s game at Heidelberg.
Division III scoring record: Mount Union kicker Mike Zimmerman has now scored 277 career points, breaking the NCAA Division III and Mount Union record for points scored by a kicker, topping Ken Edelman’s 274 points from 1987-1990. Edelman earned a professional tryout with the Cleveland Browns in 1991 and narrowly lost a roster spot to Matt Stover.
Nice hands: Receiver Pierre Garcon is now four touchdowns shy of tying Adam Marino’s Mount Union and OAC record of 40 career receiving touchdowns.
Sizzling scoreboard: In the second quarter, a surge protector on the left side of the stadium scoreboard caught fire and shorted out. The only visible sign to the fans was a little bit of smoke. The maintenance crew took care of the problem and the scoreboard continued to operate the whole time.
Pitching a shutout: Mount Union’s first team defense has not been scored on yet this season. The unit is averaging about two quarters of play in each game this season.
Field goal record: Mount Union backup kicker Jay Carpenter tied the school record for the longest field goal with a 47-yard thump. Ken Edelman set the record in 1990.
