Mellott honored

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — Lindsey Mellott, sophomore goalkeeper for the Westminster College women’s soccer team from Lakeview High, has won two honors this week.

Mellott was named Presidents' Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, and then was honored Tuesday as the Eastern College Athletic Conf. Div. III South Co-Defensive Player of the Week.

She was recognized after recording 13 saves in a scoreless tie at home against Penn State-Behrend on Saturday.

Then also Tuesday, Mellott registered her second shutout of the season by making four saves as the Titans posted their fifth shutout win in their last six games, 1-0, over Pitt-Greensburg on sophomore reserve forward Lauren Graeser’s goal.

The week before, Brittany McKee, Westminster’s senior defender from Hubbard High, gained national recognition by being named one of 11 position players selected to the d3kicks.com Team of the Week.

McKee was cited for her defensive play in a pair of Titans’ shutout wins over at Pitt-Bradford (4-0) on Sept. 5, and La Roche (6-0) on Sept. 8.

Johnson on pole
at Dover race

DOVER, Del. — Jimmie Johnson apparently likes the view from the front a lot better.

Johnson, who had to rally from a bad start in the Chase for the Nextel Cup to win his first series championship last season, got off to a strong start to defending his title last weekend and shows no signs of slowing down.

After pacing the field during practice Friday afternoon, he won the pole for Sunday’s Dodge Dealers 400 at Dover International Speedway — his second pole in the past three races. Johnson’s lap at 154.765 mph easily displaced rookie Juan Pablo Montoya from the top spot.

A 39th-place finish in the first race of the Chase last season left Johnson having to play catch-up. In this season’s Chase opener, last week, his sixth-place finish last week left him tied with Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon for the points lead.

Bonds posts farewell
message to fans

SAN FRANCISCO — Barry Bonds is finished in San Francisco.

The Giants told Bonds they will not bring him back next season, ending an era in which he became all-time home run champion and a lightning rod for the steroids debate in baseball.

“It’s always difficult to say goodbye,” Giants owner Peter Magowan said Friday. “There comes a time when, I think, you have to move in a different direction.”

On his Web site, Bonds said he wasn’t done.

“There is more baseball in me and I plan on continuing my career. My quest for a World Series ring continues,” he said.

Flesch shoots 65;
takes golf lead

VERONA, N.Y. — Steve Flesch didn’t glance much at the leaderboard. He was too busy watching his irons perform their magic again.

Flesch shot a 7-under 65 Friday to take sole possession of the lead after two rounds of the inaugural Turning Stone Resort Championship. He was at 13-under 131 and one stroke ahead of first-round co-leader Jeff Gove (67) and Brendon de Jonge, who had a second straight 66. Charles Warren (65) was alone in fourth, another shot back.
