CORTLAND — Lakeview High’s defense held Hubbard’s potent offense to just two first downs over seven possessions from the tail end of the first quarter to midway through the final quarter, as the Bulldogs rolled to a 28-13 Trumbull Athletic Conference triumph Friday night.
Lakeview (3-2, 2-0 TAC) put together solid scoring drives on its first possession of each half and capitalized on the Eagles’ two turnovers for two additional touchdowns. The Bulldogs last beat Hubbard (2-3, 1-1 TAC) in 2003 and lost 34-0 last season.
“Our 10 seniors hadn’t beaten Hubbard and they wanted to make sure they got it done,” Lakeview coach Tom Pavlansky said. “Our kids are a confident bunch and I think its because of how they work in practice.”
The Bulldogs drove 79 yards in 10 plays the first time they had the ball and scored as Vinnie Elias broke open an inside counter play for a 21-yard touchdown with 2:56 remaining in the first quarter.
Lakeview’s first drive of the second half covered 12 plays and 68 yards with tailback Ben Moody scoring from 6 yards out.
Clark spearheads drives
Each of those drives included a long completion by quarterback Justin Clark who finished 7-of-9 for 111 yards. Lakeview gained 137 yards on 42 running plays.
"Our kids want to set the tone at the start of each half and be able to execute the game plan we’ve prepared all week for,” Pavlansky said. “Our kids want to compete and we want to get better and we prepare hard. They pay the price for it during the week.”
Hubbard moved the ball on the first possession of the game, running 11 plays and penetrating Lakeview territory before punting. After that, the Bulldogs shut down the Eagle attack until it was too late.
Hubbard netted just 19 rushing yards on 19 running plays, but that included three sacks of quarterback Marc Kanetsky for 26 yards in losses. He ended up 18-of-32 passing for 172 yards, but was picked off once and lost a fumble, setting up two other Lakeview scores.
“I’m going to give their team credit, they played a good defensive football game,” Hubbard coach Brian Hoffman said. “They were able to put pressure on us. In all honesty, we didn’t do a good job up front, they got heat on our quarterback.”
Braunegg sets up TD
The interception, by senior Michael Braunegg, set up the Bulldogs on the Hubbard 40. An 11-yard pass from Clark to Jon Biehl and runs of 12 and nine yards by Moody set up Lakeview at the eight. Justin Wazelle carried three straight times, scoring from the three to make it 14-0 with 2:06 left in the half.
Moody’s touchdown to open the second half made it 21-0 before Hubbard tallied with 5:25 remaining in the game. Kanetsky hit Robert Wigfall on a slant from 15 yards out. On the previous play, Mike Carnahan held onto the ball after taking a big hit on a post pattern as the Eagles converted a fourth-and-16.
Lakeview’s Rylan Hardman recovered Kanetsky’s fumble with just under three minutes to play, setting up the Bulldogs at the Hubbard 4. Moody showed great second effort to score from there on the next play to make it 28-7.
Kanetsky scored on a quarterback sneak in the final minute to set the final score.
