YOUNGSTOWN — Open houses have been scheduled for the new East and expanded Chaney high schools. A ribbon cutting and tours of East at 474 Bennington Ave. are set for 2 p.m. Sunday. The building will remain open until 5 p.m. The same time schedule will be followed at Chaney, 731 S. Hazelwood Ave., on Sept. 30.
Niles girl attacked
NILES — Police Chief Bruce Simeone is cautioning parents not to allow their children to walk alone in isolated areas because of the danger of being attacked. His warning comes in the wake of a Wednesday afternoon attack of a 14-year-old girl along the railroad tracks between North Main Street and Robbins Avenue. Simeone said the girl was grabbed about 3:15 p.m. by a naked man who forced her to take her clothes off. It is unclear, the chief noted, if she was sexually assaulted. She managed to break free and seek help at the General Electric Lamp Plant on Federal Street. The assailant is described as being white, in his 30s and thinly built with light brown short hair.
City offers rabies shots
YOUNGSTOWN — The city health district will give rabies shots to pets Monday. The district will inoculate cats, dogs or ferrets from 1 to 4 p.m. at their headquarters at Oakhill Renaissance Place, 345 Oak Hill Ave. Shots will be $3 each. For more information call (330) 743-3333, ext. 230.
Copper theft reported
BOARDMAN — A real estate agent for a Colorado man who owns a house in the township reported a break-in and the theft of copper plumbing. The agent told police that he arrived at the Glenwood Avenue home about 6 p.m. Wednesday and discovered the damage. The house, which is vacant, was last intact earlier this month. The burglars broke into the house by prying open a rear door then covered the basement windows with insulation they took from the walls. They then cut out and removed the copper plumbing. Neighbors police spoke to didn’t report seeing anything suspicious.
Fire set in store
BOARDMAN — Police and firefighters responded to a report of merchandise set on fire at a U.S. Route 224 discount store. An employee at Gabriel Bros. called authorities about 8 p.m. Wednesday reporting that someone had set fire to a package of jeans in the rear of the store. A store employee extinguished the flames and the fire department estimated damage at $7,500 to store merchandise.
Oak Hill Cemetery tour
YOUNGSTOWN — Four local historians will lead a tour of Oak Hill Cemetery off Oak Hill Avenue on the city’s South Side at 2 p.m. Saturday. Some of the area’s most prominent citizens are buried there as well as Civil War veterans. If it rains, the tour will be at the same time Sunday. The historians are Steffon Jones, Vince Shivers, Bill Wall and Ron Johnson.
Guilty plea in slaying
WARREN — Keith M. Brown II, 19, of York Avenue Northwest, has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and felonious assault in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. Judge Andrew Logan will sentence Brown after a presentence investigation. Brown surrendered to police in early June after an arrest warrant was issued for him. Police said Brown shot Terrandall J. Monday, of Perkinswood Boulevard, during an argument on Fifth Street on May 16. Monday died in St. Elizabeth Health Center a couple of weeks after the shooting.
Four become citizens
YOUNGSTOWN — Four individuals became naturalized citizens in a ceremony in the courtroom of Judge Maureen A. Sweeney on Thursday. Their names, town of residence and countries of origin are: Jerome Magcamit Villamin, Boardman, Philippines; Genalyn Malinao Villamin, Boardman, Philippines; Kendra Anne Siddall, Canfield, Canada; and Roberto Palacios, Youngstown, Mexico.
