Mellott named top
offensive lineman

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Youngstown State sophomore center Brian Mellott was named the Gateway Conference's Offensive Lineman of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday. On Saturday against Stony Brook, Mellott played all 72 official snaps in the Penguins’ 42-6 victory.

A reserve defensive lineman last year, he has taken over for first-team All-American Ryan Jewell at center.

Soccer loses 2-0

 KENT — The Youngstown State soccer team put up a strong defensive effort against the Golden Flashes, but the Guins could not find the net in the 2-0 loss Wednesday.

Kent State (2-4) put the first goal of the day on the board just over 33 minutes into the game. The score came from Annie Messer with the assist by Dana Neroni.

Tessa Brookman and Roechelle Boone attempted the Penguins only two shots in the first half. Brookman's shot was wide of the net while Boone's shot was blocked less than a minute before half time.

YSU (1-6) came back with eight shots in the second half, but still managed to come up short. Freshman Taylor Pickens attempted the Penguins first shot on goal that was saved by KSU goalkeeper Kris Nelson. Lauren Brennan took the second shot on goal just a minute later that was also stopped by Nelson.

Phantoms winners
in shootout, 4-3

BLAINE, Minn. — After dominating the entire game, the Mahoning Valley Phantoms hung on for a 4-3 shoot-out victory Wednesday afternoon over the Southern Minnesota Express in the NAHL Showcase.

Rookie forwards Grant Blakey and Scott Moser notched the two shoot out goals that propelled the Phantoms to the win. Veterans Derek Graham, Eric Ringel, and Miles Winter provided the scoring during regulation.

Despite jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the second period and out-shooting the Express 39-22 for the game, the Phantoms could not put the game away. Big saves late in the game by rookie goaltender Mark Lee late kept the score tied before the Phantoms won in the shoot-out.

Up next for the Phantoms is the Texas Tornado today at 6:30 p.m.

in Weathersfield

MINERAL RIDGE — The Weathersfield Board of Education on Wednesday hired these people as coaches for the 2007-2008 school year: Phil Frye, ninth-grade football coach; David Sepesy, assistant varsity football coach; Andrew Apisa, assistant varsity boys track coach; Anthony Ferradino, fifth- and sixth-grade boys basketball coach; Darren Garris, fifth- and sixth-grade girls basketball coach; Meghan Jenkins, seventh-grade girls basketball coach; and Rick Rathburn, eighth-grade girl’s basketball coach.

Tamer-Win event

CORTLAND — Tamer-Win Golf Course will hold its Harvest Amateur 3-Person Scramble on Oct. 7.

The event will have a 9 a.m. shotgun start and will be played in sixsomes.

Ursuline wins title

YOUNGSTOWN — The Ursuline High boys golf team clinched its fourth consecutive Steel Valley Conference Championship recently.

Ursuline (12-0) was followed by Warren JFK (7-5), Warren Harding (3-9) and Mooney (2-10).

Members of the All-Steel Valley Conference team are: Paul Cene, Ursuline, 37.3; Jake Detec, Ursuline, 37.8; Ryan Alders, Ursuline, 37.8; Mike Guarnieri, Warren JFK, 38.5; and Bruce Timko, Warren JFK, 39.

Swallow gets honor

WEXFORD, Pa. — Bobby Swallow, a junior quarterback for the Washington & Jefferson football team from West Branch High, has been named Presidents’ Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his passing display last Saturday against Hanover.

Swallow threw six touchdown passes to tie a school record in only a little more than 30 minutes of playing time, as W&J cruised to a 50-12 win at home.
