REV. ABAD Background


The Rev. Alfredo Abad Heras, a guest of Eastminster Presbytery, is visiting the Youngstown area through Friday as an international peacemaker through the Presbyterian Church USA. (It’s Spanish custom to use both parents’ surnames. The minister’s father’s last name is Abad and his mother’s, Heras.) His background:

Education: Bachelor’s and master’s degrees in theological studies at United Evangelical Theological Seminary in Madrid, Spain.

Instructor: Was on the faculty of Theology of Lausanne, Switzerland, from 1982 to 1987 and the Protestant Institute of Theology in Montpellier, France from 1993 to 1995.

In the church: Was a pastor in Granada, Spain, from 1988 to 2001; serving as pastor at the Iglesia de Jesús in Madrid since 2001; has been a member of the Permanent Commission of the Iglesia Evangélica Española (Spanish Evangelical Church) since 1991 and has served as general secretary since 1993.

Worldwide work: A member of the Executive Commission of the Church and Society Division of the European Council of Churches since 1992, a member of the Executive Commission of the Spanish Federation of Protestant Churches since 1996, a member of the Executive Commission of the Association for Defense of Religious Liberty since 2001. He also is a member of the General Assembly of the Spanish Commission to Aid Refugees, a nongovernmental organization that works with members of major political parties, the Roman Catholic Church, Muslim Federation and labor unions.
