Council meeting

Village council met Wednesday and handled these matters:

Announced Megan Smith as winner of the Helmet Smart project. Megan, a Roosevelt Elementary School fifth-grader, received safety citations for consistently wearing a bicycle helmet and recently won a 10-speed bicycle as part of the program, set up to encourage safety through the use of helmets.

Heard that Police Chief Lou Ronghi won an award as part of an American Automobile Association-sponsored program for the village’s going seven years without a pedestrian fatality.

Passed by a 4-2 vote an ordinance giving eight full-time village employees a one-time lump-sum payment, effective immediately. Receiving $682 payments will be David Friend, Michael Lepor, Wesley Martin and Michael Schuller of the street department and William Silves of the water department. Patrol Officers Daniel O’Donnel, Anthony Villanueva and Carl White each will get $716 payments.

Heard about plans to build a baseball complex. Councilman B.J. Farr, who heads council's park and buildings committee, said he's received specifications for the complex, which could include a large meeting room and batting cages. A $5,000 donation for materials was made by 84 Lumber Co., Farr said.

Talked about advertising for bids to perform roof work on the McDonald Recreation Center. The facility houses a senior citizens center, the post office and administration offices.
