Sex offender gets probation

YOUNGSTOWN — A 20-year-old Lamar Avenue man has been sentenced to five years’ probation and fined $500 after pleading guilty to one count of gross sexual imposition against a female relative who was 12 at the time of the 2001 offense.

Pablo Delagarza, also known as Paul Doyle, drew the sentence today from Judge James C. Evans of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, who also ordered him to maintain employment, obtain a General Education Development diploma and get counseling.

Delagarza also must register as a sexually oriented offender annually and report any address changes to the county sheriff’s office for 10 years.

The case originated in juvenile court because Delagarza was a minor when the offense occurred, but he was bound over for trial as an adult.

Not wanting to put the victim through the ordeal of testifying in a trial, the county prosecutor’s office made a plea agreement with Delagarza, in which it dropped 14 other counts that alleged sex-related offenses against the same girl between 2001 and 2004. Delagarza was jailed for 268 days awaiting court action on his case.
