POLAND VILLAGE | Council items


Poland Village council met Tuesday and handled these matters:

Announced the village’s participation in a national Cans for Cash recycling project. The program is set up to encourage recycling, and from Oct. 1 to 31, people will be able to drop off aluminum beverage cans at North Elementary School, 361 Johnston Place, during school hours. Twelve $5,000 awards will be given to participating municipalities in various divisions for the most cans collected.

Passed a motion to transfer $200,000 from the law enforcement fund into Star Ohio, the state treasurer’s investment fund, to receive a higher interest rate. About $231,000 collected from seizures, forfeitures and other means is in the law enforcement fund.

Proclaimed Saturday as Al Parella Appreciation Day. The program, sponsored by Town One StreetScapes and the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Poland library branch, 311 S. Main St., and will honor the late local artist, who died in 1999 at age 90. People are encouraged to bring their paintings by Parella to the free event. The program also will feature a 3:30 p.m. raffle to win one of his paintings, as well as a lecture by Parella’s daughter, Susan D’Onofrio. Tickets for the raffle are $10 each, or three for $20.

Passed resolutions honoring Carmella Smallhoover as Poland Schools Foundation’s Educator of the Year and John M. MacIntosh as Alumnus of the Year. Smallhoover is Poland Union Elementary School’s principal; MacIntosh, who was disabled after a car accident in 1967, became an advocate for those with disabilities, in part by promoting better accessibility to buildings and other facilities for them. Both will be honored at a banquet Oct. 25.
