MLB ROUNDUP \ Sunday’s other games
AMERICAN LEAGUE
White Sox 9, Angels 7
CHICAGO — Jim Thome’s 500th homer was a game-winner. Thome hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Chicago the victory over Los Angeles, becoming the 23rd player — and third this season — to reach 500 home runs. The slugger drove a 3-2 pitch from reliever Dustin Moseley (4-3) to left-center, ending an 0-for-11 slump and reaching the milestone in style. Frank Thomas and Alex Rodriguez also hit No. 500 this year. Thome raised his arm in the air as he rounded the bases, and he was mobbed by his teammates at the plate before he hugged his father and wife. Teammates Bobby Jenks and Jermaine Dye then hoisted the 6-foot-3, 250-pound Thome on their shoulders. It was the first time a player hit a game-ending homer for No. 500, and the first time three players reached the plateau in one season, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Thome made it to the milestone in 6,809 at-bats, the fourth-fewest among members of the 500-homer club behind Mark McGwire (5,487), Babe Ruth (5,801) and Harmon Killebrew (6,671).
Yankees 4, Red Sox 3
BOSTON — Mariano Rivera retired David Ortiz on a popup with the bases loaded for the final out, and Derek Jeter broke an eighth-inning tie with a three-run homer. Curt Schilling (8-8) outlasted Roger Clemens but couldn’t beat Jeter, who drove a 2-2 splitter over the Green Monster to give the Yankees a 4-1 lead. Joba Chamberlain and Rivera held on, helping New York move within 41⁄2 games of Boston in the AL East. Chamberlain (2-0) allowed one run and two hits, striking out three to earn the victory despite giving up the first earned run of his career — a solo homer to Mike Lowell that made it 4-2. Rivera allowed Julio Lugo’s two-out RBI double in the ninth, then hit Jacoby Ellsbury with a pitch and walked Dustin Pedroia. Ortiz popped up a 2-2 pitch into shallow center field, and a backpedaling Jeter made the catch before pumping his fist. It was Rivera’s 28th save. Robinson Cano also homered for New York. Schilling allowed four runs and six hits, striking out two in 72⁄3 innings to fall to 0-3 in his last four starts.

MINNEAPOLIS — Jair Jurrjens took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning in his fifth major league start. Detroit has won five in a row overall and nine of 11. Todd Jones pitched a shaky ninth for his 300th save, becoming the 21st pitcher to reach the mark. He is 37-of-42 this season.

Jarrod Washburn (9-15) allowed three runs and six hits in 41⁄3 innings, dropping to 10-3 against Tampa Bay. He has lost his last five starts overall.
Rangers 11, Athletics 9
OAKLAND, Calif. — Michael Young drove in a career-high seven runs, including a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning, and Texas beat Oakland in a game that featured a bench-clearing brawl. Athletics outfielder Nick Swisher, who homered in each of the first three games of the series, rushed the mound and tackled Rangers starter Vicente Padilla after getting hit in the ribs by a pitch in the first inning.
Orioles 8, Blue Jays 6, 12 innings
TORONTO — Scott Moore singled home the go-ahead run in the 12th inning, sending Baltimore to a victory over Toronto.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Phillies 10, Mets 6
NEW YORK — Greg Dobbs had a pinch-hit grand slam and Philadelphia beat the Mets for the eighth straight time. Carlos Beltran hit a tying, three-run homer for New York, which committed six errors and matched a season high with 11 walks. It was the most errors by the Mets since they had six on Sept. 13, 2002, at Montreal. David Wright hit a solo homer in the seventh to become the third player in franchise history to reach 30 homers and 30 stolen bases in a season.
Diamondbacks 6, Dodgers 1
LOS ANGELES — Edgar Gonzalez won his seventh straight decision, Chris Snyder hit a three-run homer and the Diamondbacks salvaged the finale of a three-game series. Gonzalez (8-2), making just his second start since June 26, was lifted for a pinch hitter after giving up one run and six hits in five innings. Four relievers did the job after that.
Padres 5, Giants 1
SAN DIEGO — Jake Peavy lowered his major league-leading ERA to 2.39, struck out 10 to take over the big league lead and pitched the Padres to another important win. Kevin Kouzmanoff had three hits and an RBI for the Padres. Peavy (18-6) leads the NL in wins and set a personal best. He allowed four hits in 71⁄3 innings and won for the ninth time in 10 decisions.

WASHINGTON — Tim Hudson held Washington to seven hits in a complete game, the first by an Atlanta pitcher this season, and the Braves kept their flickering playoff hopes alive.
