Facing multiple charges
YOUNGSTOWN — Blood on the porch of an abandoned home and a broken window led police to the arrest of North Side man Saturday.
Responding to a tip about a broken window, police found 22-year-old Aquila Blue, of 730 Parmelee Avenue, bleeding on a couch in a West Warren Street home. Two children in his care were reported to be naked except for dirty diapers. Police believe he tried to break into a neighboring vacant home, then retreated to the address where he was arrested.
He was transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he attempted to flee. He is charged with child endangering, breaking and entering and escape.
No motive in shooting
YOUNGSTOWN — The victim of an East Side shooting late Saturday says he has no idea who would want to shoot him or why.
Dedavece Wright was found clutching his arm in front of Jitso’s Place, 2023 McGuffey Road. The 26-year-old Steel Street resident said he was walking on Miami Avenue near McGuffey Road when someone fired a shot from an unknown car.
Wright was transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center, treated and released.
Animal-cruelty counts
YOUNGSTOWN — A West Side woman was arrested on three counts of animal cruelty late Sunday morning after police officers found a starving bulldog in her backyard.
Two additional neglected dogs were found at 11:22 a.m. Sunday in 29-year-old Maureen Marie Markulin’s Matta Avenue home, according to reports.
Red kettle volunteers
NEWTON FALLS — The city’s Salvation Army unit is asking for volunteers to ring the red kettles this year in late November and through most of December at three locations: Giant Eagle, IGA and Pamida from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The unit’s Church Mouse Christmas Mission is also hoping to provide toys and meals on Thanksgiving and Christmas to needy children this year and asks for donations. About 200 children received toys and about 375 people received free meals last year. For more information, call (330) 872-5574.
Culvert replacement
Canfield — Beginning Sept. 24, U.S. Route 62 between state Route 46 and Raccoon Road will be closed for five days for a culvert replacement. Motorists will be detoured to U.S. Route 224 to state Route 625. This work is part of an Ohio Department of Transportation maintenance project to improve drainage on Route 62 between Route 46 and Raccoon Road, said ODOT officials.
New band night set
HUBBARD — Hubbard High School Marching Band has rescheduled its band night for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Participating bands with Hubbard are Brookfield, Champion and Liberty. Admission is $5 per person and $3 for students and seniors 65 and older.
Marching against crime
YOUNGSTOWN — National Night Out March Against Crime will be at 4 p.m. Friday. The march will line up at the corner of Madison and Elm at 3:30 p.m. After the march, a picnic will be prepared for anyone in attendance at Wick Park.
