Boardman girls shut out Canfield


Fitch lost to Green; Howland’s runners fared well in Cleveland Heights.

CANFIELD — Junior forward Lea Byers made the lone goal Saturday night as the Boardman High girls soccer team defeated Canfield, 1-0.

Byers’ goal came with 9:32 remaining in the first half.

The Spartans are 6-0-1.

Boardman sophomore goalkeeper Cheyenne Khatib made eight saves.

Canfield is 3-2-2.

Green 2, Fitch 0

GREEN — Jennifer Sprandel and Caitlen Glassner each made an unassisted goal to pace Green (5-3-2).

Green goalkeeper Cara O’Neil made seven saves.

Fitch (4-3-2) goalkeeper Ali Tolich made two saves

JVs: Green 5-0.

Cross country

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS — Howland sophomore Aaron Sutton finished second with a time of 17 minutes, 21 seconds to lead the Tigers to the team title at the nine-team McDonough Invitational on a hilly course at Forest Hills Park.

Dale Hynes finished ninth for the Tigers, while Tim Hammond was 14th, Mike Madgar placed 20th and Ryan Kellerman was 26th.

Parma Senior’s Alex Cole placed first with a time of 17:15, while Akron Hoban and Madison finished second and third, respectively, in the team standings.

Volleyball

UNIONTOWN — Canfield finished third of eight teams at the Asiscs Invitational, hosted by Lake.

Lake and Akron-St. Vincent-St. Mary finished first and second.

Canfield defeated Tallmadge, 25-20, 25-17, and Norton, 25-22, 25-11.

Against Tallmadge, Courtney Rothbauer made 10 points and one ace; Jackie Nentwick made four digs, six blocks and five kills; and Kelsey Owen made eight kills.

Against Norton, Nentwick made eight kills; Kalie Luklan made three blocks, nine points, two aces and six kills; and Owen made four digs and five kills.

Canfield lost to St. Vincent-St. Mary 19-25, 25-20, 25-19. Nentwick made 10 kills, 10 blocks and seven points, while Owen made seven kills and 10 digs.

Rachael O’Hara made 40 assists over the three matches.

Nentwick was named to the all-tournament team.

Football

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Billy Bair rushed for 270 yards and scored six touchdowns as Mars rolled past Shenango. 55-20.

Bair scored on runs of 21, 1, 36, 48, 5 and 57 yards as Mars totaled 447 rushing yards against the Wildcats.

Ryan Tanner threw two touchdown passes and ran for a third to lead Shenango.
