NRA Youth Sportsfest

VIENNA — The Trumbull County 4-H Shooting Sports Pioneers Club will host a free NRA Youth Sportsfest Camp on Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Fish & Game Club of Vienna, state Route 193 across from the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport. The purpose of this event is to teach basic gun and archery safety, demystify firearms by providing hands-on experience, and provide an enjoyable learning experience to youths ages 9 to 18. Participants will have the opportunity to shoot .22 rifle, .22 pistol, shotgun, muzzleloading rifle and archery equipment with adult supervision. A picnic lunch will be provided. Hunter safety course

CORTLAND — The Conservation League (Mosquito Bowmen) will host a hunter safety course Oct. 12 from 5 to 9 p.m. and Oct. 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the club, 2535 McCleary Jacoby Road, Route 305 or Route 46. To register, call 1-800-WILDLIFE. Participants must attend both sessions.

Doe licenses

MERCER, Pa. — Doe licenses will be mailed out Monday to those who applied for them, county treasurer Ginny Steese Richardson said Thursday. She said her office processed 15,570 licenses this year, a number that has grown significantly since the 7,000 in 1994 when she took office. Pennsylvania counties are now part of Wildlife Management Units. Mercer is part of the unit that includes Mercer, Lawrence and parts of Butler, Beaver and Crawford counties.

Community auction

ROGERS — The Rogers Community Auction and Open Air Market, in conjunction with Ohio Valley Outdoor Magazine, presents its fourth annual Ohio Valley Big Buck Rendezvous today and Sunday. The event will include a sportsman show, gun shop display, hunting exhibits, taxidermist competition, seminars and gun auction. A contest will be held for mounted deer heads, judged by Buckeye Buck Scoring. Times of the event are Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $2 or deer head entry for scoring. Children 12 and under admitted free. Rogers Community Auction and Open Air Market is located at 45625 State Route 154. Rogers is the tri-state area’s largest open air market with more than five miles of vendors set up under roof and lights and auctions throughout the day. There’s 100 acres of free parking and no admission fee on Fridays.

Ducks Unlimited banquet

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning Valley Chapter of Ducks Unlimited will hold its annual membership banquet Sept. 28 at the Assumption Social Centre, 350 South Belle Vista Ave. Doors will open at 6 p.m. when a social hour will begin followed by dinner at 7 and an auction at 8:30. Ticket prices are as follows: Individual, $60; couple, $95; greenwing, $40; sponsor, $300; and sponsor couple, $340. A pre-banquet raffle for a Nova 12-gauge pump-action shotgun also is being held. HILLSVILLE, Pa. — The Mahoning Sportsman Association will present a gun show today and Sunday at 3839 West Main St. Admission is $4; children under 12 will be admitted free. More than 40 tables are planned. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16. Migration of cranes

COLUMBUS — Wildlife biologists from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife recently placed transmitters on two sandhill cranes that spent the summer in Geauga County in order to monitor their movements as they fly south for the winter.
