Foundation gives grants to Harding and Austintown

AUSTINTOWN — The Dominion Foundation has awarded $6,000 in grants to two local schools to help strengthen math and science programs.

The Dominion Educational Grants Partnership Program targets children in grades K-12 in schools within the company’s service areas.

Schools submit grant proposals seeking assistance ranging from $500 to $7,500.

The Austintown schools and Harding Elementary School in Youngstown are this year’s recipients.

Austintown was awarded $5,000 for a series of teacher workshops and continuous math support for K-8 teachers. The effort is designed to help close the achievement gap and improve instruction for all pupils. The grant will also provide math coaches for kids.

Harding was given $1,000 to enrich kindergarten pupils’ understanding of earth and space sciences. The grant covers arts and crafts and other supplements to help teach about the solar system, and the children will get to visit a local planetarium.

This year, Dominion, one of the nation’s largest energy producers, gave out nearly $290,000 to 105 schools and educational organizations in 10 states.
