Bus breaks loose and drifts downhill

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — A 13-passenger bus that should have been in park, with the key out and ignition off, took itself for a ride.

New Wilmington Police said the bus ended up on the campus of Westminster College Saturday afternoon after it drifted across a driveway, picked up speed down a steep embankment, and crossed Waugh Avenue and Market Street.

It struck the left rear corner of a car on Market, driven by Kyle Ann Skarada, 56, of Clarion, Pa. Skarada and a passenger were not injured, police said.

After hitting the car, it jumped a curb, crossed two sidewalks and came to rest on the college campus five feet from McGill Memorial Library. There were pedestrians in the area, but no one was hit, police said.

Police said they checked the shifter on the bus and found it was malfunctioning.
