Teacher’s car strikes, kills jogging student

ALLIANCE (AP) — Police say an Alliance High School student jogging home was struck and killed by a car driven by a teacher.

Alliance Police Chief Lawrence Dordea says a preliminary investigation suggests 15-year-old Alison Draves was listening to an MP3 player when she crossed the street and was struck by a car driven by John Hampu, a social studies teacher at the school.

The accident occurred about 8 p.m. Monday, and Draves died the next day.

Dordea says the girl was running with the flow of traffic on a street with no sidewalks.

Hampu told authorities he was driving about 25 mph when he heard a noise and stopped, thinking he had hit a bird.

No charges have been filed, and police will forward the investigation’s results to the city prosecutor.
